Sleeping Well With Good Pillows

Have you ever asked yourself, “How important is my pillow? Does it really make a difference in the quality of my sleep?”

According to the recent article, “Snuggle Up With The Perfect Pillow,” published by WebMD, it makes a world of difference. A clinical psychologist quoted in the article said the right pillow can improve the quality of your sleep and the healthful rejuvenation you receive from it. An orthopedic surgeon quoted in the article states that the wrong pillow can exacerbate headaches, neck and shoulder pain, arm tingling and numbness, and coughing and wheezing. Use of the wrong type of pillow will not cause of these conditions, the doctor noted, but it can make them worse.

So what exactly is the “right pillow?” It depends on your sleep style. The number one goal is to keep your neck aligned with your spine while you sleep. If you’re a back sleeper, you need a thinner pillow so your head is not pushed too far forward. It’s best if the pillow has more thickness in the bottom third portion to provide neck support.

If you’re a side sleeper, you need a thicker, firmer pillow to provide neck support in the large space between the ear and the outer shoulder. If you’re a stomach sleeper, you need a very thin, almost flat, pillow to keep your neck and spine properly aligned. If you’re a stomach sleeper, consider tucking a pillow under your stomach at night to prevent lower back pain.

If you’re like most people, you sleep in more than one of these positions during the night. That’s why you need a pillow designed for multiple sleeping positions with the right type of filling to accommodate your own special needs, such as chronic back pain, neck pain, or allergies.
